Teach English Online: Get Paid With These 13 Companies

There is a huge demand for people to teach English online to non-native speakers, particularly for Chinese students. More and more online companies are seeking English as a Second Language teachers or tutors with various levels of experience and education to meet this demand. These types of online jobs can be a great source of extra money or even a full-time gig.

Pay can range from $10-$25 an hour or more, depending on your experience, education and how often you are available to teach.  The companies I have researched offer an array of opportunities with varying requirements.  Some companies require a college degree, others don’t. Some prefer you have some teaching experience, while others only require that you be a native English speaker. Check out my list of 13 companies that pay you to teach English below.

1.) Berlitz– Teachers make an average of $14.50 an hour at Berlitz. They hire part-time teachers to teach a number of languages. They hire online teachers and tutors as well as onsite teachers at one of their 50 locations across the United States. Requirements to teach English are:

    • Must be a native English speaker.
    • Eligible to work in the U.S.
    • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent
    • Teaching experience is not required but is a plus.

2.) Cambly – Cambly pays pay $0.17 per minute ($10.20/hour). Getting started is as simple as creating an account. You can teach English online without a degree on your schedule.

3.) DaDa – Pays online teachers up to $25 an hour. Teachers must work a minimum of four hours a week and can work up to 20 hours weekly. Instructors teach Chinese children between 4-16 years old.  Requirements are:

  • Native English speaker
  • Hold a BA degree or above
  • Stable and strong internet connection
  • Teaching experience is preferred
  • TESOL/TEFL certification is preferred, or willingness to obtain certification

4.) English Hunt – This company pays an average of $10 an hour for phone teachers to conduct conversational English classes via a softphone app installed on your computer. Requirements include:

  • Applicants must have at least 48 college credit hours, OR an ESL certificate.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

5.) GoFLUENT – Reportedly pays between $14-$16 an hour for online teachers. Hires corporate language trainers. Corporate English Trainer requirements include:

  • Have some business and/or corporate experience.
  • Be a Native English speaker with excellent communication skills.
  • Applicants should be American, Canadian or British citizens.
  • Some college is required; degree is preferred.

6.) iTalki – iTalki lets you set your own rates, so you make what you think your time is worth. You can also work anytime you’d like. iTalki is seeking teachers/tutors for various languages including English. There are two types of jobs available: Professional Teacher who teach courses and perform conversational tutoring and Community Tutor who do conversational tutoring. iTalki is seeking teachers/tutors for various languages including English. Requirements are:

Professional Teachers

  • Native speaker who is professionally certified or experienced in teaching a language as a foreign or second language.
  • Must provide documents outlining your professional training or experience.
  • 1 to 3 minute introductory video.

Community Tutors

  • Native speaker that enjoys teaching informally. 18 years or older.
  • 1 to 3 minute introductory video.

7.) Landi English – Teachers are paid between $18 and $25 an hour.  Applicants must commit to teaching at least 12 hours a week.  Students range in age from 5 to 10 years old.  Requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s degree or above preferred.
  • TEFL/TESOL/CELTA or other teaching certificate preferred.
  • Teaching experience preferred.
  • Excellent communications skills.

8.) Learnlight – This company hires online language teachers. The reportedly pay about $14 an hour.  Requirements include:

  • Native English speaker
  • ESL or other educational field qualifications and/or experience
  • Business experience is also highly-valued

9.) Open English – Pays $13 an hour. They hire practicing ESL and TESOL teachers.

10.) QKids – QKids pays between $16 and $20 an hour for teaching English online to Chinese students. The requirements for teachers are:

  • Must reside in the US or Canada and either have a degree or currently be enrolled in a university program.
  • Applicants must provide a current resume, their availability, their computer SPECS.
  • Selected applicants must also provide a two-minute introduction video: Introduce yourself, where you live, your educational background, and any experience teaching or working with kids. Then tell or read a children’s story.

11.) SameSpeak – Native English speakers may apply to be an English speaking coach. Coaches provide online conversational lessons. SameSpeak pays $10 for every half-hour tutor session. Applicants can be as young as 16.

12.) SayABC –This company pays $21 per 40-minute session. The growing list of countries where teachers may apply include the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Among the requirements are:

  • Must be a native English speaker
  • Computer with fast internet connection and audio/video capability
  • Bachelor degree or above, or in the final year of study.

13.) VIPKid– Earn between $14 and $22 an hour providing one-on-one instruction to Chinese children in English.  There are three basic requirements teachers must meet to teach for VIPKID:

    • You are eligible to work in the United States or Canada.
    • You have a bachelor’s degree or higher.
    • You have at least one year of experience teaching, tutoring, coaching, or mentoring. You do not need an education credential or experience in ESL.
